Cool Thought of the Day

This came from yesterday during a short presentation by an Italian architecture professor at a grad school here in Rome--one thing he said, roughly (because he said it in Italian and then one of the ND professors translated) was this:

Designing architecture on paper is like composing sheet music--it's a way of representing the thing, but not the primary way it's meant to be experienced. Just as music has to be heard, architecture has to be seen in real life. And I suppose that's why I'm in Rome...

Also, I think I'm going to start reading Papal Encyclicals and/or Vatican II documents. Does anyone have any ideas of what a good one to start with might be?

  2. Having only read excerpts of these, my recommendation is not personally authoritative, but these are some of the foundational texts for the Church today:

    1. Christifidelis Laici (JPII; on the mission of the laity in the world)
    2. Gaudium et Spes (Vat II; Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World)
    3. Lumen Gentium (Vat II: Dogmatic Constitution on the Church)

Other fun ones might be JPII's "Letter to Families," "Mulieris Dignitatem" (On the Dignity and Vocation of Women), "Fides et Ratio," and "Evangelium Vitae." Have fun!

P.S. Have you read "Deus Caritas Est?" I recommend that as your first read if you haven't yet.
